Contemplating the Next Step

Contemplating the Next Step: Finding Balance in Semi-Retirement

There comes a point in everyone’s life where it is time to take stock, pivot, and decide on a new direction. For some, planning the future comes naturally. For others, navigating life’s transitions is a daily struggle.

I was once told that as long as you have two working hands and two legs to stand on, you are never truly without. But there is a missing piece to that piece of advice: you also need the clarity of mind to figure out exactly what to do next.

Key Takeaways: Finding Balance After 60

  • The Mind: True clarity begins within; a sharp, positive mindset unlocks creativity.

  • The Body: Physical movement and whole-food nutrition are essential for longevity, even if you hate traditional exercise.

  • The Spirit: Daily faith and open communication with God provide a grounded foundation for life’s changes.

Facing a Career Crossroads After 60

Right now, I find myself at a distinct crossroads. I am in my 60s, and the reality is that I can’t handle heavy painting equipment like I used to. Like many people facing semi-retirement at this age, I realize that standard retirement income only goes so far. I need to find fresh, sustainable sources to replace that income.

So, how do you reinvent yourself when your physical limits change? You look inward.

Instead of keeping my skills in separate boxes, I started looking for the unique threads that connect them. I realized that when one area of life is out of balance, everything else suffers. If things are stressful at home, it spills into your daily work and moods. If work is draining, we bring that frustration, worry, and rigid mindset home to our families.

Out of this realization, Healthy Life Creative Life was born—a journey to create true balance within myself and around me across three core pillars: Mind, Body, and Spirit.

1. Nurturing My Mind for Fresh Creativity

Every major life change starts with your thinking. We always have a choice: look at things through a negative lens or view them from a higher, brighter perspective.

I’ve learned that the unexpected challenges life throws at us aren’t always bad. Often, they are designed for our ultimate benefit. If your mind is cluttered and overwhelmed, your decisions will be too. But when your mind is sharp and clear, creativity flows freely, and new income ideas naturally come to light.

As I look ahead, I truly believe the world is going to need a return to the “old ways”—the tried-and-true, wholesome recipes and traditions that connect us back to how God intended us to live.

2. Reconnecting with My Body and Holistic Nutrition

Taking care of my body during this transition means focusing on two things: movement and nutrition.

  • Finding Everyday Movement: I will be honest—I absolutely hate traditional exercise. Always have. Getting motivated for manual labor these days takes a lot of mental psyching up. However, living in a third-floor apartment means I naturally get 154 steps per load of laundry! My goal now is to build simple, functional movements into my daily routine to stay active without hitting a gym.

  • Embracing Whole-Food Nutrition: While the physical exercise part is a bumpy road, getting my brain wrapped around food and nutrition has been much easier. I’ve cleaned out my pantry and changed my grocery habits. I am baking my own fresh bread, preparing meals ahead of time, and freezing fresh ingredients. Learning what my body can no longer tolerate at this stage of life can be daunting, but the research makes for great morning coffee reading.

3. Grounding My Spirit in Daily Faith

My spirit is anchored by my faith. I pray every single day, but it’s not just formal prayer—I talk to Jesus throughout the day as if He is sitting right next to me. Whenever I have a question or feel overwhelmed, I just ask Him.

He keeps my spirit steady and guides my heart. To be completely transparent, He also keeps a tight reign on my tongue! There are days I just want to let people have it, but He gently reminds me that judgment is His job, not mine.

While I haven’t picked up my physical Bible in a while, I look up scriptures constantly during our daily conversations to see what He has to say about the world. I especially love the shorter, powerful chapters that carry timeless messages.

A Work in Progress

God isn’t done with me yet. This new chapter is a work in progress, just as I am, and just as we all are.

We live in a complicated, messy world where so many people feel misguided, lost, and unhappy. I want to show others that finding peace and direction starts from within. It truly can be done. By intentionally balancing my mind, body, and spirit, I know I will be able to create beautiful art for people—in many different forms—for a long time to come.
